Explain that renewable and nonrenewable resources supply energy and materials.

Energy

Energy is the capacity to do work. Energy can be divided into kinetic and potential energy. Potential energy is the energy an object has because of its position, rather than its motion. Kinetic energy is the energy an object has because of its motion. An example is an object held in a person's hand has potential energy, which becomes kinetic energy when the person lets it go, and it drops to the ground. Resources all have potential energy and when they are used they have kinetic energy.

Examples of Renewable and Natural Resources

Are resources that will grow back once some is used or will always be around.

Hydro Energy

Hydro Power comes from the force of the water. Water power has been used even back in to the Middle ages. Water wheels are turned by a river or stream to generate power.

Wind Energy

Wind power has been used for many years in windmills. Today more high tech windmills are used to collect the wind power. These windmills have propeller-like blades and are spaced apart so that they do not block other windmill's wind. Space where these windmills are are called "wind farms" the land around the mills can also be use as farmland or grazing land for animals.

Solar Energy

Solar power is collected using solar cells. Sun energy is not going to run out soon. This energy is expected to last for more than 5 billion years. Several countries have started to use solar energy to power different things.

Geothermal Energy

Geothermal is the energy from the Earth. This energy is created by the heat that is escaping from the core of the Earth to the crust. This heat heats water and creating steam which creates energy.

Biomass Energy

Biomass is living matter. Such as lumber, fruit, vegetables, meat from animals, dung, and more.

Nonrenewable Resources

Are resources that will not come back after they are used up.

Oil and Petroleum

Petroleum or crude oil, is naturally occurring oily, bituminous liquid composed of various organic chemicals. It energy is used to power cars or heat houses.

Natural Gas

is a flammable gas which is used to power several different things.

Coal

Coal is a combustible organic rock which is burned to produce energy.
